Dear Friend, This past July, we had the zechus to participate in the Vaad Hatzalah delegation to Romania. There we witnessed firsthand the incredible work of Tikva Odessa in general, and specifically in how they managed to escape Ukraine at the outbreak of the war, right before the borders slammed shut. What was more amazing was that they managed to escape as an intact community of close to 1,000 nefashos. Tikva Children’s Home (https://www.tikvaodessa.org/about-us/history-of-tikva/) was founded as a project of Ohr Somayach by Rabbi Shlomo Baksht in 1993. Started as an orphanage for abandoned Jewish children, Tikva raised these children bderech hatorah. These children grew up and formed the nucleus that evolved into a beautiful community of ehrliche yidden. Before the war in Ukraine, the Tikva Odessa kehila serviced thousands of Yidden in Odessa, with myriad services including separate boys and girls orphanage, a school network servicing 1,000 children, meals on wheels for seniors and everything in between. As the war broke out, on one hour’s notice at one suitcase per family, the core kehila of 1,000 members managed to escape Odessa. After a hair-raising trip of nissim and amazing siyata dishmaya, they made it to a resort town hotel in Neptun, Romania. That’s where these families have been living for the past year. These heretofore self-sufficient self-respecting families were out of jobs, living like refugees in small hotel rooms and eating in a communal dining room being supported by tzedakah. Many of these people look like they walked right out of Lakewood or any regular orthodox community! Finally, Tikva has the opportunity to resettle in Bucharest, Romania. Bucharest is the capital of Romania. Tikva has rented a block of 200 apartments in which it’s members can settle and live normal lives. In Bucharest, they will be bale to obtain jobs and again become self-sufficient, self-respecting, settled families. Please join us in this Charidy campaign to help “Bring Tikva Home” and help them put the Ukraine war behind them. https://vimeo.com/801007070/efa6066720
