The first Shluchim to Moldova were sent by the Lubavitcher Rebbe in 1990, and Chabad of Moldova has brought an abundance of Jewish life to Moldova, and continues to grow and expand. Chabad of Moldova reaches out and welcomes every Jew, offering material and spiritual assistance to all. With the unconditional love and acceptance for which Chabad is famous, every Jew can find a sympathetic ear and helping hand, and answers to any questions they may have about Jewish life and practice.
"Moldova Matters- Expanding Our Reach" is the project that has, and will continue to bring about real change and facilitate education, aid poverty and provide community outreach.
Covid-19 - During these past few months, with all the chaos due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the community in Moldova turned to us for guidance, necessities and love. For the past few months, we have provided our community with food packages, aid to the elderly and whatever else was needed. Many individuals and families would not have hot meals and other necessities during this time without our continuous help.
Care for Kishinev: Poverty in Moldova is a major issue. Most of the country depends on agriculture as a source of income. With less than optimal soil and weather conditions and recent border tensions with Ukraine, Russia and Romania, 42% of the rural population is below the poverty line compared to 28% in small towns and 14% in the capital city. The smallest amount of financial assistance can give these people the hope and determination to turn their lives around.
Student Outreach: Tens of Israeli students study in Modlova's medical colleges. They spend up to eight years learning in Kishinev, and depend on Chabad of Moldova for connection to Judaism and community. We create special programs for them, host them for Shabbat meals, and spend many hours giving them a feeling of home away from home in Moldova.
Mitzvah Mission: Most parents want their children to have a bar or bat mitzvah, be called up to the Torah before their families and friends and join the Jewish people with their new role of civic duty, but in Moldova having a bar or bat mitzvah is so much more. It is the determination and proof that the Jewish nation survives, lives on and flourishes despite the atrocity that once filled this country. Giving these Moldovan families the spirituality and helping them connect to their roots has tremendously impacted the community and its future.
Seniors and Survivors: Visiting the seniors and survivors in Moldova is key to the Jewish community’s future. Rebbetzin Leah Abelsky visits tens of seniors each week, brings them homemade meals and spends time with them, giving them the love and support that they otherwise wouldn’t have.
Yeshiva: Although Moldova is closer to modernity than ever before, the country’s overall mindset is still to ignore or deny the Jewish identity and rich history. This has lead us to double our efforts and open a Yeshiva in 2015. Our goal is to have more kippah and tzitzit wearing Jews walk the old-country streets, to instill a Jewish pride, a love for Israel, and spread the light of Torah. In addition to the student’s rigorous learning schedule, the highlight of the program is visiting small towns and villages to ignite the souls and sacred hearts of the Jewish people.
Torah Classes: We have daily Kollel Torah classes for men in the mornings, we they also receive fresh, hot breakfast. Relevant topics in Judaism are discussed, and the attendees gain a deep and solid appreciation for their Jewish heritage and history. We also have classes for women in the evenings.
Pre-School: We have a pre-school class for young children, where we provide a safe and welcoming environment for the children, while in a warm, Jewish setting. Our staff assists, guides and encourages each child according to his/her individual interests and present level of development.
