The 2nd Annual Storyfest Chairs’ Challenge 2024
Airlie MacLachlan, Somerset Storyfest Chair, and Alex Woodthorpe, Deputy-Chair, Somerset parents Narelle Higgs and Aaron Hill, together with fellow Storyfest Board members Sara Kirby and Michael Arnold plus a large number of Somerset parents and Storyfest supporters will take on the second annual Storyfest Chairs’ Challenge this winter.
With More Go Further
In 2023, the Chair’s Challenge saw Airlie, Alex, Narelle and Aaron walk a combined 696km over three Kokoda Challenge races in the Queensland Hills in support of Somerset Storyfest and the Kokoda Foundation, raising in excess of $30,000 for Storyfest. This year we are challenging the community to help us go further as a group by joining us in a single 30km race over the Gold Coast Hinterland on 13/14 July. We need more than 24 walkers to take to the hills in Storyfest orange T-shirts, and for this the Strollers are committing to raise more.
Somerset Storyfest, Australia’s leading children’s literacy charity, is once again partnering with the Kokoda Foundation as it looks to instil a love of reading and storytelling in children of every age while also embracing all that Kokoda stands for.
Now in its thirty first year, Storyfest has worked with 117 schools, distributing over 3,300 books and reaching more than 31,400 young readers in the last year alone. With established children’s authors festivals on the Gold Coast and in Longreach, new festivals planned for Emerald and St. George, and “On the road” visits and pop up events, Storyfest looks to bring a love of reading and storytelling to more children in Australia each and every day.
The annual Kokoda Challenge is in honour of the Australian soldiers who fought along the 96km Kokoda track in Papua New Guinea in World War 2. These soldiers have become known for their courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice. It is these virtues that the Kokoda Youth Foundation looks to instil in its youth programs, designed to help young people gain physical and mental resilience through outdoor experiences.
Please support our Storyfest Strollers as they tackle the hills of Queensland in support of these two great causes.

What and when is Somerset Storyfest’s Giving Day?
Giving day is a 12-hour online fundraising campaign where we will be asking our community to join with us to raise much needed funding to continue our mission to connect children with books and authors. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to fall in love with reading. Your donation will help us take authors and books into schools for disadvantaged children, ultimately making books accessible for everyone.
