It all started from a hypothetical question one Shabbos. Where is the next generation and how are they engaged?
We surveyed the community and there was a group interested, but we needed to build momentum. There was a need to create a dedicated space for the next generation’s religious community to thrive. Next, we needed a location.
Before we set up shop in November 2023, the team got to work, bashing down walls, painting rooms, creating furniture, and spreading the word. Little did we know that this space would be creating meaningful experiences for young Jewish adults, hosting meaningful events and becoming a popular destination for the next generation to thrive.
Gesher was born, and it only continues to grow, having now brought in our dedicated Community Leaders.
From a small idea in the heart of Elsternwick, we’re now so much more!
Why the name Gesher?
- Gesher means “bridge” in modern hebrew. With our tagline ‘The next generation’, our goal is to provide a space for 18-30 year olds of all backgrounds to feel welcomed. We aim to bridge the gap between different communities, in an environment grounded by Torah values with valuable religious experiences.
What’s our vision?
- Addressing a gap in Melbourne’s Jewish community, Gesher provides a platform for the next generation to grow from where they are, to where they aspire to be, through strengthening their Jewish identity. We foster religious experiences through: - Engaging events - Building meaningful relationships and encouraging active participation in one's religious growth
- Gesher is not just going to a shule it’s about going on a journey
