For many diseases, medication is available at the local pharmacy. But what if the disease is life-threatening and a trip to the pharmacy will yield nothing? What if the cure depends solely on finding a person who is a genetic match to the patient? And what if none of his family members are that genetic match? Since genetics is based on ethnicity, a Jewish patient will match another Jew. Somewhere in the world a match exists but how can he be found?
Ezer Mizion has the answer. In 1998, a Registry, the largest Jewish registry worldwide, was founded which currently has over One Million registrants ready and waiting to help save a life by donating their stem cells. Bone marrow transplants are used as therapy for about 100 different life-threatening illnesses, including leukemia, Hodgkin's disease and enzyme deficiencies. The procedure is quick, similar to giving blood, and the feeling of fulfillment is boundless.
Ezer Mizion has handled thousands of search requests from dozens of transplant centers in 48 countries around the world. Thousands have been saved, 454 in 2022 alone, but many more are still waiting. Some of these are young grandparents hoping to dance at their grandchild’s wedding. Others are mothers of small children, terrified at leaving their children to grow up as orphans. And some are teens or tiny tots wanting only one thing…a future.
The cheek swab test is simple and the registrant’s information will remain on our database for decades. For the registrant, it is just moments. For the patient, it may be their life!
Expanding the registry with new registrants is vital. Currently 76% requests receive a positive response. But the other 24%? Their lives? Their families? Each new registrant strengthens the Registry which acts as an insurance policy of all of Klal Yisroel.
How can you help?
Genetic testing is expensive. The cost of each genetic test is $50.00. The SWAB TEAM is a novel initiative for post-high school girls and young ladies who are determined to make a difference.
Raising funds for more swab kits will allow Ezer Mizion to expand the bone marrow registry, broadening patients' chances of receiving a life-saving bone marrow transplant.
