The Chabad House of Ethiopia was established 9 years ago by the emissaries of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Eliyahu and Deborah Habib. It is a warm and open house that happily accommodates to the Jewish and Israeli community, workers, businessmen and travelers in the country.
Since its establishment, the Chabad House has been conducting comprehensive activities to deepen the Jewish identity. Shabbat meals, kindergarten, events both for the Jewish community alongside humanitarian activities such as aid to Jewish prisoners, rescuing and rescuing travelers, and providing aid to the locals.
Last year a new branch was opened - a magnificent new synagogue in the center of the Addis Ababa International Airport, which is the primary address for Jews arriving in Ethiopia and the hundreds and thousands who pass by every day and use the Addis Airport as a stopover.
In a turn of events, six months ago Chabad activity in Ethiopia underwent a severe upheaval. After many years of non-stop work, including during the Corona period when the country was completely shut down, the Chabad house continued to operate with dedication. Rav Eliyahu began to be attacked by severe stomach pains and was taken to ICU for an operation.
The rabbi was immediately hospitalized, while his family and the Chabad house he founded remained thousands of kilometers away from him. In those days filled with worry, on his bed in intensive care, with everything around him in dismay, Rabbi Eliyahu thought about his life's mission, about his family, community ,friends of the Chabad House in Addis and the whole world. He then promised Hashem that if he recovered, he would expand the beating Jewish heart of Ethiopia and he will take the Chabad activity in Ethiopia to dimensions they are yet to reach.
Today, thanks to the Creator of the world, after a wonderful chain of miracles. Rabbi Eliyahu returned to fully function the Chabad house. And now the time has come to fulfil his promise.
