It’s so easy to forget, isn’t it?  We hear about all the bad things people do, we hear how angry people are, we hear the news about Congress… and all we can do is think that people just stink.  There’s just no good in them.

What we don’t realize is that the good in people is usually not found in the big stories.  In politics and war and online forums.

No, the beauty of people is found in the little things, the little moments.  And that’s why the letters below are so powerful.  They show how every moment, there are so many things happening under our noses that are truly incredible.  Moments that will remind us that people really are awesome.

And, most importantly, that we can be awesome too.

This letter was posted on Twitter by a the owners of a family-run grocery store in Nashville. A mysterious man had given them an envelope which had this letter, and $400.

Along with the note, they provided these thoughts:

‘We were robbed about 11 or 12 years. Today, we surprisingly received this note from the robber and the stolen cash returned.

‘This is truly inspirational and reminds us that there are plenty of good people in this world. To the anonymous person, we want to tell you all is forgiven and thank for your note,’ they continued.

‘We don’t care about the money. We are more inspired and touched by your act. We hope you find peace in life and prosperity. Best wishes!’

What a beautiful reminder that even the people that hurt us can redeem themselves.

2. Even More Repentant Thieves

A few months ago, some thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of equipment from an agency that help victims of sexual violence. When they realized what they had stolen, and who from, though, they apparently had a change of heart, wrote a letter asking for forgiveness, and secretly returned the items.

In case you can’t read it, this is what the letter says: “We had no idea what we were takeing. Here your stuff back. We hope that you guys can continue to make a difference in peoples live. God bless.”

Apparently, instead of going out to arrest people, the cops spoke to some homeless people in the area and explained the work that this agency does. The director of the agency believes that the homeless then spread the word, most likely leading to the return of their equipment.

Sometimes we just need a reminder, don’t we?  Now, imagine if even more people did this.

4. A Letter To A Friend With No Memory

Not all letters are meant to be immediately inspiring.  Sometimes, it’s the story around the letter and the love put it into it that makes it so powerful.  This letter was written by the friend of a person who was in the ICU with short term memory loss.  Every day, she would read the letter to help remind her who she was and what had happened to her.

And, as she explained in a Reddit thread, the friend didn’t just do that, but also offered to stay with her children so that her husband could visit her in the hospital.

Read more details in her friend’s explanation here.

The poor kid felt so bad for stealing the sticks.  But, really, this is such a great foundation of morality for a child, wouldn’t you say?

And best part: the Yosemite National Park ranger who received this letter later explained that he was going to take pictures of the sticks around the park, enjoying their newfound freedom.

6. Good Guy Cop

This person left a note under their windshield explaining to parking enforcement that they were too drunk to drive the car home. A cop left a ticket: but the ticket was just a letter thanking the person for making a smart choice. Beautiful.

7. Pay It Forward

What a beautiful note.  A man, his wife, and baby daughter were out for dinner, and instead of receiving a check, their waiter brought them this anonymous note from someone who had paid for their dinner.

The important message here is that all these letters aren’t just supposed to remind us how good people are.  They are all great reminders of how it is our job to do good in the world.  That so many of these things are easily attainable if we open our eyes to the possibilities around us to do good.
